Actors provide a flexible model for building and reasoning about agents in open distributed systems. Considerable research has been done on the Actors model and its application to parallel and distributed computing. A number of results have been obtained which show how the equivalence of actor systems can be established, their interaction policies customized, and larger systems built by composition. Work on compilers and run-time systems has provided efficient mechanisms for implementing mobile actors. I will summarize these results as well as discuss current research on building formal models of large-scale agent systems.
