Grid layer for persistency object pattern

Diploma Thesis, TU-Vienna, 2005

Abstract

Virtual shared memory systems deal with communication and management of data in network environments. This thesis focuses on the distributed persistency aspect of such systems.

The grid persistency layer is based on the extended virtual shared memory framework XVSM respectively the forerunner Corso and the local persistency manager which provides a call-level-interface for managing the persistency of objects in a database. The persistency manager acts on a single site. The grid persistency manager extends the range of this functionality to the whole grid and provides a transparent and easy-to-use API for applications to persist and restore shared data, that is present in the virtual space.

The transparency covers not only the API for the local PM. To achieve a high level of reliability for the data it is necessary to deal also with the question where the objects should be stored.

So the grid persistency manager provides location management for the described persistency. Groups of sites can be defined and kept in the virtual space as well. The members of these groups are used as targets for all requests that are made by client applications.
